I have had an interesting and varied career! Over almost 30 years I can honestly say that there has not been more than a handful of days that I have not been excited about what I was doing!
I started off as a developer. My area of expertise was computer communications and networking. Communications between different types of computers, and getting them to talk to each other. I had chances to increase my skill as a C programmer, experience LISP and life in a multinational Fortune 500 company.
This led me to an opportunity to go back to my alma mater to help drive out their internal network connectivity, administer important computer systems for researchers, work on a radar research project, and work towards a Master’s degree in neural net control of the vapour pressure in a nuclear reactor.
From there I joined a small company named RIM, where we turned the communications world on its side. We did all sorts of wireless enabling technology before settling on the BlackBerry. I was a major developer of the radio for the original BlackBerry before turning my attention to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to wirelessly synchronize email, calendar, contacts, browsing on a BlackBerry.
After 18 years, watching RIM grow from 10 people to 17,000 I left to join another small company, Mabel’s Labels in my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. A young startup, I had an opportunity to take all of my experience and help a manufacturing, high technology company grow and expand it’s business. I am also getting a chance to do what I love most, be innovative, think outside the box to find new and exciting ways to use technology.
This experience is also giving me a chance to be involved with the young, exciting tech community in Hamilton, helping them with my experience, my knowledge, and general inquisitiveness.
